silva lining

Thiago Silva. Hail the best defensive prospect to enter Europe. And to which better club other than AC Milan. Seems like a match made in heaven. Istanbul shook when Milan's defense set foot on Turkish soil. Only 3 goals conceded previous to the final - a glimpse of the bags of quality this Italian side carried 3 seasons ago. Defense has always been synonymous with AC Milan. The names that have formed the defenses for this great club are breathtaking - Costacurta, Nesta, Maldini, Stam, Cafu, Baresi, Tassotti, Galli, Zambrotta. Silva will soon be an addition to this hall of fame. Recently though, the club has made a joke of the word - defense. When I look at Milan's currently line of defenders, I shudder. Not with respect, but with despise.

Coming from the Selecao, this 24 year old impressive centre back is becoming a first team regular with the Brazil national team. Trust me, this is quite an achievement. With the massive Brazilian names plying their trade in Europe, for this youngster to cement a highly demanded position in the main team is more than just commendable. He is Fluminese's number 3. Call it destiny or prophesy, but he will be replacing Milan's number 3, Paolo Maldini. Although the number 3 jersey of Maldini will be treasured to honor the 3rd generation of the Maldinis, Silva will surely step into the shoes of the greatest defender the world has ever seen. Will he handle the pressure? Oh yes he will. With the great number of Brazilians in the squad, he will blend in smoothly. He has 6 months to integrate with the others, a duration similar to Pato's before he made his debut for the club. The after effects of Pato's transfer, prove my point.

I have watched enough videos and read enough articles to believe that Silva will soon become a world class center back. Considering we have beaten off competition from the some of Europe's finest sides in Inter, Chelsea and Villareal to sign this colossal centre half, only convinces me further of the quality that is in store for the Rossoneri. The lad scores goals that would make any attacker proud, he is a massive threat from set pieces, his strength is hard to contend with in challenges, his sense of timing when he goes in for a tackle is impeccable and he is lightening quick. This is more you can ask from a central defender. What more, he is young, and we need the young blood to rejuvenate the aging backline. Take a sneak peek at the defender, by using the URL pasted at the end of the article. Oh yes, please forgive the theatrics in the video.

10m euros were paid to acquire Thiago. At 2.5m euros a year, Silva has signed a 4 year contract. He wont be able to play till the start of the new season, as Milan have exhausted their non EU slots for the season already. Poor purchases in the summer have more or less been compensated for by this signing. Due must go to Leonardo for this discovery. Another jewel of a find, by the man who brought in Pato, Kaka alongside others into the most decorated club on the planet. Silva is expected to create a formidable partnership with a Frenchman in the heart of defense next season, a partnership that could go down as the best in the world. So, we await thee, Phillipe Mexes.

8 and counting

Milan 5 Udinese 1
The best form of defense is attack, or so it is said. Milan have one of the worst defenses in Italy. I might be exaggerating, but there is a possibility my bias can be a genuine reality. After understanding that holding teams wasn't our cup of tea, we decided to go on the offensive. And boy did we treat Italy to some smashing attacking stuff. 8 consecutive home wins, and its not over.

Some major changes were seen from the beginning. Favalli on the left, Jankulovski in midfield. These were traces of dynamism in the coach, which all of us Rossoneri were beginning to feel had become extinct. Right from the word go Milan attacked in their typical delightful direct play. And within 3 passes in the 3rd minute, Pato opened Milan's account. The ball crossed from the flanks had a little more weight on the pass, but Pato got up and directed the header like a true finisher. Simple, yet outstanding. No one really expected this, as we were short of man power due to injuries and suspensions to Ambrosini and Zambrotta. Beckam was presented to the fans and players today, and with the legend sitting in the stands, the playing eleven wanted to show just what a great team he has joined. Attack was matched by some outstanding keeping. D'Agostinho's long range effort was superbly saved by Abbiati. Surely and shortly, Milan had there 2nd. Pato skipped past players on the wing and set up Kaka wonderfully and the latter had to just put his foot to the ball to finish. Udinese realized what a disaster this is turning out to be and upped the tempo of their game. Some sharp crisp passing inside the Milan's box left all the home side defenders stupefied, as Di Natale slotted a good shot into the back of the net, and Abbiati had no chance. Top class finishing, leaving the score at 2-1. The Diavoli immediately responded with Pato, who was showing his class amongst several top players in the field. A chip from Pirlo went straight to Antonini who put the ball onto the path of a rushing Pato, who finished coolly past Handanovic. The highly rated Udinese keeper was probably bewildered by the flurry of goals going past him. Kaka and D'Agostinho had chances but both couldn't take it. AC Milan were being AC Milan on the night, after being a side that had looked like Barnsley for the last few weeks. Pirlo had upped his level and Abbiati was well aware at the back. Pato had a few opportunities to complete his hattrick, but the young Brazilian wasn't as unforgiving as he was in the first 20 minutes. Towards the end of the half, Pirlo had a great chance to score from a free kick, as he hadn't scored for the club since Feb. His effort was sheer world class, but it hit the post. Anyway Seedorf was there to apply the finish. 4-1 to the red and blacks at half time.

Kaka had returned after injury and you dint expect him to be fully fit. But he was a live wire. Within 5 minutes of play resuming, he had two chances on goal. His quality finally paid off, as his shot from the edge of the area smashed into the top corner, typical Kaka. This goal was scored out of nowhere, a trait of a world class attacking midfielder. Beckam seem pleased, and so were the fans. Flora Flores was denied by Abbiati, and somehow the crosses were not falling as intended for Udinese. Pirlo had a pass from Kaka, but his touch was a tad bit heavy.Kaka was a pain for the Udinese defense. D'Agostinho was constantly being frustrated by Abbiati. Darmian came on for Antonini. The highly rated defender from Milan had a chance to shine before his idols and mentors. The tempo dropped as the home side took their foot of the accelerator. Due to the overcrowding of defenders, the Udinese attack was helpless and ineffective. Strasser then replaced Kaladze, and these unfamiliar faces were nice and a fresh change. The next few minutes were uneventful and the game ended with the scoreline 5-1.

Its good, and nice. We end the year on a high. We have shown that when needed we can perform. It was a big night, one that reestablished the faith that I was beginning to lose in the team. With January approaching, I am more than anxious, about who would join this team. A defender and a midfielder are quite certain. Lets hope its not as disappointing as last winter. This winter break is going to help the team to rest and get their minds in place, and I will be hoping for a renewed squad come Jan, when we play Roma.

thankfully, only 2

Milan 2 Wofsburg 2
After the thrashing at the hands of Juventus over the weekend, AC Milan were hell bent on straightening things in the UEFA Cup game midweek. We were hosting German club, Wolfsburg. Hunting down the wolves would have been high on the agenda, but thats not what happened. Germans shouldn't have been too difficult, one look at the Bundesliga table, and it would be hard to spot this German club. Pretty much gives a picture of how strong this club really are, but Milan couldn't capitalize. The visitors were 2 points ahead of us as they had won their previous two encounters. With both these clubs already qualified, the top spot would be up for the grabs. Former Serie A heroes, Barzagli and Zaccardo were making a return to home soil after departing from Palermo over the summer.

Both teams started slow, and within the first ten minutes Senderos injured himself doing the medics at Milanello a great favor. Kaladze replaced him, so the risk factor hadn't changed much at the back. Not very much later, a corner from Seedorf was headed in with great finesse into the bottom corner of the goal by the captain Ambrosini. His headers are truelly a delight to watch. After Milan went ahead, a comfortable night was expected. The visitors started to press for the equalizer but the home team tried to control the tempo of the game. A siren went of in the home camp when after 25 minutes a shot from Dzzeko crashed against the bar. Shevchenko made a rare mistake on a well built counter attack to throw away a goal scoring opportunity. The game was fairly entertaining though radically low on quality. These are trademarks of the Bundesliga and Milan have begun to become a perfect fit for these standards. The Rossoneri defense continued to show its inability to defend crosses and set pieces. Inzaghi was as usual standing offside whenever his team got the ball, so the opportunities ended with Inzaghi messing up his positioning. The game continued down the same pattern before the referee haulted play for half time.

Dzeko had a few chances after play resumed, and Wolfsburg seemed like they wanted a goal desperately, with Milan trying to keep possession. The home side dint seem to press enough nor was the defense strong enough to hold up for the rest of the game. Inzaghi had a chance as Ambrosini put him through but the poacher lost his balance (how unusual, not!), and hit the ball straight to the keeper. Ancelloti became a bit bold as he replaced Pirlo with Pato, and this had its consequences because almost immediately, Wolfsburgs' accurate passing was rewarded with a goal by Zaccardo. The passing and movement left the Milan defense dizzy. Barely after Wolfsburg scored, the home side found an opening, and Pato finished like a composed striker, something that had become of a rarity to him after his move away from Brazil. Milan had changed into a 4-3-3 from a 4-4-2 and this provided Wolfsburg more time and space in the middle, and they started dictating the midfield. Inzaghi then had another of his numerous chances and even this time failed to find the back of the net. The Germans were finding it hard to keep up with Pato because his pace was simply beyond theirs. He did have a chance which fell to Inzaghi which required a quick reaction, but this was beyond the Italian, as he is 35. Later Dzeko's cross found Saglik unmarked inside the box but his header was directed straight at Dida. Dzeko, who was running the game for Wolfsburg intercepted a weak pass and bore down on goal. If not for the pressure by Kaladze, it could have resulted in a goal. But the Germans had nothing to worry, because barely 20 seconds later they equalized, as Krzynowek long range effort was deflected by Saglik into the goal. Milan tried to score with the remaining few minutes ticking down on them, but they simply couldn't.

Dida definitely saved further humiliation, the defenders were quite woeful as usual. Clarence Seedorf was trying hard in the midfield with Ambrosini but their success rate was limited. Zambrotta was running around the park, and the running seemed aimless from where I was sitting. Inzaghi was wasteful as ever, but the bright sparks certainly were Pato and Shevchenko who were making the German defense sweat. Anyway, Udinese are coming home, but I doubt Milan are going to enjoy their Christmas this season.

trouncing at turin

Juventus 4 Milan 2
It was one of those games that produced a lot of hype. It was branded as the game that reveals the true contenders for the Scudetto. Turns out the result was not very surprising. With many of Milan's first team out of action, a defeat was certainly on the cards, but a trouncing was not expected. Inter were winning games for fun, and they were 9 points ahead after a win over Chievo. Both teams simply had to win, not just for pride, but for keeping in pace with the champions.

Milan did start enthusiastically and created more of the chances early on in the game. Zambrotta was in for a torrid night, and his performance just cemented the fact that he would turn out to be a poor buy. The home fans dint do much to help his confidence. Juventus then got into the game, and target man Amauri had his chances which he scuffed. In about the 14th minute, Jankulovski showed what a poor defender he is by going fully into Del Piero from behind, inside the box. He showcased his need for a crash course in defending from that tackle. Del Piero then put away the penalty, Abbiati stood no chance. A few mintes later, Pirlo took his freekick well, and it required a stop from Manninger. Chiliieni was the pick of Juve defenders as usual, and he kept Zambrotta's cross from reaching Seedorf. Nedved then was replaced by De Ceglie and what a game the latter was going to have. A few minutes later, some great cleaning up from Kaladze resulted in Ronaldinho receiving the ball who then passed the ball into the box, which Pato slotted like a striker should. Milan were level on terms. 3 minutes later, Chiellini headed Juventus ahead from a corner, and it seemed like no one was marking him. Fundamental mistake from the defense, and it wasn't going to be the only one. Amauri then gave Juventus a 3-1 lead, as Kaladze completely misread the cross. Jankulovski was dreaming about the Swiss Alps, just behind Amauri at the same time the cross came in. Seconds before the whistle, Marchisio had a great solo run before shooting over.

After returning from the break, Milan showed more determination to get back into the game. Shevchenko replaced Emerson during the break. Minutes after resuming the game, Marchisio had his effort go agonizingly over the bar. Sissoko shot a powerful drive from a half volley, which required a fabulous save from Abbiati. Juventus now, began to lift the tempo of the game. 9 minutes after play resumed, Ambrosini took a wild shot, which deflected off Cheillini into the goal, completely foxing Manninger. 3-2. Ray of hope for the visitors. Ambrosini had made up for the missed header, earlier on. But all that went up in smoke, as on the 64th minute,
Zambrotta made a ludicrous tackle on De Ceglie, and he was given his second yellow card, and along with it his marching orders. As I had earlier mentioned, Zambrotta is turning out to be a disastrous purchase. Any 31 year old, in his common sense wouldn't have gone in for a tackle like that, when he is already booked, and more importantly, when his team is trailing. But thats Zambrotta for you. After 68 minutes, Amauri made Milan pay for the folly in defense, as he finished past Abbiati. On this occasion, Maldini was out on the right, signing autographs, Jankulovski was still dreaming about the Alps, and Abbiati was admiring Amauri's long hair instead of guarding the near post. At this point of time it was game over, and to prevent further humilation, Ancelloti brought on Antonini for Ambrosini. Prior to this, Del Piero had an effort on goal, which hit the post. Inzaghi was thrown into to replace a disappointing Pato, and this was Ancelloti's last throw of the dice. The hitman got into the mix almost immediately as he headed a cross from R80 towards the goal, but it was a bit too easy for Juve's number 2. AC seemed reclined to the fact that they would lose, and dint press ahead to trouble the Old Lady nomore.

Whats more disappointing than the scoreline is the performance. The passing was dismal to put it kindly. The players seemed colour blind as they laid the ball to the feet of the opposition at every given instance. They seemed disinterested, and were playing as though they are doing a favor. In terms of postioning, the players were all over the park. Emerson was shaking hands with Manninger, Maldini was out on the right, Pato being the lone striker was out wide instead of being central. I mean, it seemed chaotic. Going by this performance, this season pretty much has become another fiasco. We have two top clubs awaiting us, to make a meal of our defense, and boy do I fear what the scorelines in those games might be.

kaka+ronaldinho=disarray

When I heard Ronaldinho (R80) being linked with Milan a couple of years ago, I was thrilled. Thrilled beyond belief. But this was in about 2006, where he was by far the best attacking player in the world. After mesmerizing Spain and Europe during the beginning of this decade, he fell from glory. And what a fall that was.
At the same time, Kaka (K22) emerged as one of the hottest talents, and gradually became the best player on the planet. He was expected to become the new idol of the club. He did, not disappointing many.

The problem arose when in the beggining of this season, the Milan management decided to pour out precious 18m euros over Ronaldinho. This Brazilian had turned into a demi god at Nou Camp, but after his fall, no one really wanted him there. So he packed his bags and travelled to the San Siro to join Milan. The big bellied, washed out, over the hill player was greeted by thousands at the stadium. I fathom thats a similar reception Christiano Ronaldo would get at the Bernebau, or not. All were happy, but for what, mind you? How much competition did we have to sign him? Which other top European club wanted to have anything to do with the Gaucho? The answer is none.

Kaka on the other hand took over from Rui Costa to become one of the most feared trequartista's in the game. I would have understood if Ronaldinho's transfer was for monetary and commercial reasons, but it seems it was for more. He is actually being played, and unfortunately at what cost? R80 is not the kind of player Milan needed. We had to purchase a top class target man, and a world class defender in the summer. What we do get is R80 and Senderos. R80's flair was never going to suit Milan, and I still dont think it does. I am a firm believer that stats sometimes can be misleading, and I believe that to be true when I read R80's for Milan this season. He has started 12 games, been used as a substitute 4 times, in which he has scored 9 goals and made 1 assist. Yes he is leading the goal scoring charts for the club. But he has contributed in no other way to the team. His game lasts for 5 minutes, and for the rest 85, he is simply waddling around.

Now lets look at Kaka's stats. He has started 15 games, been used as a sub 2 occasions, scoring 5 times and making 4 assists. Disappointing, right? Here is why. Because he is playing alongside that buck toothed wonder, R80. When Kaka plays with Ronaldinho, he has to play from a deeper position, and hence he has to do all the dirty work of cleaning up the play. This leaves Ronaldinho with more opportunities upfront, enabling him to score more. Ronaldinho barely moves except when he has the ball at his feet, as the pot belly is a bit irksome to carry. In the 7 games that both these superstars have played in, Milan have had 3 wins, 3 draws and one defeat. Thats 12/21 points earned, clearly showing compatibility issues between both these players. Well, that was expected, if Germany 2006 was anything to go by.

Looking deeper at Milan man Kaka, when he was employed as the man in the hole behind 2 strikers. Please note, R80 wasn't involved in these games. Kaka was employed in these 5 games, in a more advanced role, he scored 4 and created once. We won all the 5 games resulting in 15/15 points. Food for thought - Kaka is 26, and in his prime. Ronaldinho is 28, and recovering from the worst crash, in his career graph. Kaka is a world class player, Ronaldinho was a world class player. Kaka has more experience at this club, Ronaldinho has 6 months of the same.

Kaka when employed as the sole attacking midfielder can wreck havoc in opposition defenses. He is at his prime, and should be given his preference of role in the team. Sometimes I feel that both these players are forced upon the gaffer and he has no choice but to throw them on the field expecting some miracle to save the team. And fortunes haven't really let the coach down recently, or so it seems. Kaka also has taken his concerns to the press, and Ancelloti had to intervene to say the golden words - everything is ok. With misplaced priorities in the transfer market, this club is heading for doom. Results need to be more consistent, and as it proven, Kaka can gaurantee them, almost single handedly. He has done that in the past, and he continues to do it. He plays with the team and scores, something Ronaldinho at the moment cant do (or shall we say can never do). If results need to come by, then the rhythm shouldn't be disturbed, and the rhythm is best when Kaka is pulling the strings. Ance, use Ronaldinho as a sub, give emphasis to Kaka. Dont displease the latter as there are plenty out there willing to pay millions to make him wear their club colors. Ronaldinho can rake in the moolah, let Kaka rake in the goals.

klumsy kaladze

Milan 1 Catania 0
After crashing out of the Coppa Italia, we were left competing in only 2 competitions. Torino and Lazio are teams we played recently and we lost out to the latter just a few days ago at home. Here are the scorelines from their respective games, and mind you, these teams played at home. Torino 1 Fiorentina 4, Lazio 0 Inter 3. They were thrashed by our rivals and we have struggled against them. Palermo, hammered us in the previous matchday, and this week, they lost to Cagliari. The reason I am highlighting these results is because I want you to see how good AC really are. They simply dont have it in them to cruise past teams that are way inferior to them. A 2-0 or a 1-0 can be comfortable, look at Manchester and Chelsea's results over the weekend. They enjoyed near domination, in possesion and in class. The same cannot be said of my favorite club, so far this season.

After a run of poor results lately, Milan had to win to keep in touching distance of the top spot. Catania on the other hand have been great away from home, and if their last fixture had ended in their favor, they would have been in the top 4 on away form.

The first half started on a low note. Shevchenko and his prodige, Pato, were given chances early on in the game but the former dint hit the target with his header. Maldini then made Bizzari stretch from a Pato free kick, and quite immediately, Catania talisman, Mascara hit the bar from outside the box. Milan were attacking directly, with the visitors deploying the counter attack tactic as their primary tool of offense. Brazilians Emerson and Kaka had their chances which kept Bizzari busy. AC Milan were clearly the better team and worked their socks off to conjure attack upon attack.

Kaka, after the start showed he meant business as his shot just missed the target. Gattuso has been Milan's best player this season and he was making the Catanians think twice before attacking. He stood strong, breaking every attack. And because of him, most of the attacks on the Milan goal were very unconvincing. Kaka then had his usual blistering run as he skipped past 3 defenders only to be stopped at the box. Pato's long range effort was tipped away fantastically by the incredible Bizzari, and moments later, Milan found their well deserved lead. It came from a corner as Kaka's guided header was deflected into the net by Stovini. Milan continued to press ahead, but rewards were hard to come by. Mascara had a rare chance for his side but his effort was saved by Abbiati. Flamini responded to this with a left footed shot, but Bizzari was equal to it. Kaka then curled a long ranger but the ball went slightly over the bar. He also set up Pato, but the young striker's ball control let him down. Moments before the closure of the game, Kaladze handballed inside the box, but the referee was linient with Milan, as they have been this season. The Georgian is renowned as one of the most under-rated defenders in Europe. I think even that, is a compliment. His hand balling antics cost us recently, and he seems to be keen on continuing. This aging versatile defender looks like a klutz without Nesta beside him.

Kaka was a livewire today. He was his usual scintillating self. This primarily because Ronaldinho wasn't on the pitch. Ronaldinho also being in the team has caused unnecesary complications for the coach. He is more often than not forced to play both these wizards. And this has reduced Kaka's effectiveness. It has had such an effect on him, that he has taken it to the press. Things not really looking good at the Milanello, as we see it.

We now travel to Turin, as we take on hard working Juventus. The Old Lady has toiled all season and her grit has brought her so far. We are sure to concede this weekend. And without Borrielo, our chances of scoring rests entirely on Ronaldinho. But can our defense hold back the mighty Juventus attack? I fear they can't. Not looking forward to this game, and hopefully the El Classico will distract people, so that the humiliation can be reduced.

2/3

Milan 1 Lazio 2
I am dejected, to say the least. After receiving a thrashing from Palermo, we had to save some face. We left the San Siro saving nothing. Fortunately the fans dint have to face the defeat first hand.

Milan fielded a strong team. Not first choice, but the team they fielded should have been able to beat Lazio. However, we ended up losing the game. We fought, hard. But at the end of the day, no one is bothered about losing. That is what gets on my nerves. We lost a game and are out of a competition. Its Italy's top cup competition. We lost it, wake up!

Lazio started brightly, but after 18 minutes, the 10 players in red and black realized they are playing a competitive game. With half of Lazio having chances at our goal, it was time we reacted. Ronaldinho's clean pass was recieved well by Shevchenko and he did well till the finish. This was the first of many chances he would blow. Lazio continued to create chances with Lichtsteiner almost scoring for the visitors five minutes later. Kolarov also had his shot on goal, that was saved miraculously by Dida. This opportunity arose due to some careless defending from Kaladze. Towards the end of the game, Flamini and Pandev had chances which they flushed.

Kolarav had his 3rd shot after half time. Rocchi and Pandev were combining really well, evoking outstanding saves from Dida. Former Milan player, Foggia also had his share of chances. Shevchenko was wasting chance over chance upfront. Emerson was sent off 20 minutes after the start for a foul on Ledesma. Dida kept his goal clean by stopping Kolarov's free kick. Ronaldinho after 5 minutes elbowed Rozenhal on the face. Fortunately, the ref dint spot it, or else we would have played with 9 men. However, with 13 minutes to go, Shevchenko scored a stunner from 20 yards out. After Zarate's introduction, Lazio were faster up front and were causing trouble to the likes of Favalli. The Italian made a clumsy foul on Zarate, inside the penalty box. The Argentine scored the penalty with comfort. Zarate and Kolarov had their efforts on goal, but the game ended in a draw, as extra time awaited

Pandev then directed his club towards victory after shooting Lazio's second just minutes after the game resumed. Milan defenders stood as rocks. Ronaldinho almost levelled as his free kick deflected off the bar. Flamini then tested Muslera. Foggia's close range shot was remarkably saved on 112 minutes from Dida. But at the end of the game, the scoreline dint change.

Catania await us in the weekend, and then we have 4 games, against some of Italy's top sides. This kind of scoreline would not be welcomed in the future, but I am sure it will be expected.

i saw it coming

Palermo 3 Milan 1
I saw it coming, all the way. Milan's 16 game unbeaten streak came to an end. As flattering as that sounds, there are concrete reasons for not having lost these games. One would have to be because of the sub standard quality of teams played, next would have to be sheer luck. For all those who think I am an overly pessimistic fan, take a look at the final score of this game. And it will speak for itself.

Palermo are a good side, with some top class players. Cavani is a wonderful prospect, Miccoli is an experienced striker, Simplicio is an admirable midfielder, Cassani is a highly rated winback and Amelia is possibly second best Italian keeper. With a side this good, AC were always going to struggle. Also the fact the Gattuso and Kaka wouldn't play this game. Palermo was under massive pressure having taken only 1 point from their previous 3 games. Milan had to win this game to stay in the hunt, after Inter brushed aside Napoli earlier in the day.

Miccoli was going to trouble the defense all night, and he got into the act from the very beginning as he tried a long ranger which Abbiati dealed with efficiently. The home side continued its spell of dominence with our defenders defending like boys. Milan got into the game when a cross from Zambrotta met Pato's head but the starlet headed wide. Pato had another chance a couple of minutes later, but he inspired a good save from Amelia, but I do feel the Brazilian should have scored. Miccoli resumed his long range shooting as the defense stood as mere spectators. Abbiati was pulling one excellent save after another. Pato then was bought down in the edge of the box by Amelia resulting in a penalty. Ronaldinho stepped up and his poorly placed penalty was saved by the Italian keeper. Pato was receiving knock after knock from the Rosenero players, and was forced to be substituted for the old war-horse, Pippo Inzaghi. Miccoli continued to trouble the defense in red and black, but was frustrated on this particular occasion by Jankulovski. On this occasion, the former Benfica man got past 3 Milan players before he was tackled by the Czech. Just minutes before the half-time whistle, Inzaghi was fouled by Bovo outside the box, and Ronaldinho was unlucky again as his well struck free kick, which hit the cross bar.

In the second half, Palermo dint back down. They continued to press after a goal-less first half. Miccolo then scored a wonderful goal. Absolute stunner from long range and it was a solo effort. And he thoroughly deserved the goal. The Rosenaro went ahead at the Renzo Barbera, with the crowd going wild. 57 minutes into the game, Ancelloti makes a ridiculous substitution. He brings on Emerson for Flamini, and Shevchenko for Ambrosini. Shevchenko almost immediately forced a save from Amelia. A few minutes later, the home side doubled their advantage, as Cavani headed in Palermo's second from a Liverani chip. Maldini displaying what horandous defending means, simultaneously. Pirlo then forced a save from Amelia from a free kick. Bovo and Simplicio also had their chances. After 80 minutes, Simplicio scored a free header from a Balzaretti's cross. He was completely unmarked. Shows how chaotic our defense is. Just couple of minutes later, Dinho ran across the home defense as if it wasn't there and was bought down by Bovo. He struck his penalty with conviction, and after that Milan were a changed side. Ballardini made a defensive switch as he brought off Miccoli, and brought on Kraer. Even after this, the visitors continued to press front but without reward.

Abbiati is largely responsible for limiting the humiliation. Maldini and Bonera became examples of how not-to defend. Midfield was slow, sluggish and disinterested. Attack was anonymous. Ronaldinho was the most inspirational player up front, or rather in the team besides Abbiati. This result will most probably repeat in the coming weeks, considering the kind of teams we are coming against.Lazio, Juventus, Udinese, Roma and Fiorentina just to name a few. The quality of the team and the manager will be exposed, for the world to see. Beware, Rossoneri!

powerless progression

Portsmouth 2 Milan 2
Many believed this would be a breeze for Milan. And considering the side that Milan put out, it can be safely assumed, that's pretty much what Milan expected as well. Fratton Park was buzzing with life and according to reports, it had intimidatory effects on Kaka. So Milan's best player was intimidated by Fratton Park after plying his trade in San Siro for 4-5 seasons? Who are these Journo's?

Pompey and Rossoneri were going at each other from the whistle with Portsmouth creating more chances. However it was Inzaghi who was going to be the first one to get a clear cut opportunity, which he used to hit the post. Crouch also got his chance which he misfired, not unusual for someone like Crouch. He missed one again, this time on the volley. Belhadj and Traore were impressing on the flanks and yes that is quite astounding. Pippo had a chance with a misplaced pass from Gattuso, but he lobbed it over the net. Kaka then blasted one into outer space, and thats not the first time he has done that this season. Crouch had another chance and the tall Englishman was creating a nuicanse for the terrible back four.

Kaka continued to struggle as the game progressed, with Glen Johnson firing over. This guy at Pompey seems like a different human being now when compared to the one at Stamford Bridge. The excellent right back put in a delicious ball and Younes Kaboul headed Pompey ahead deservedly. I think teams have now understood the key to score against Milan - aeriel balls into the penalty box. The English wingback was at it again, providing his second assist for the night, sending the home fans into raptures. He got past 2 players with relative ease and crossed in for Kanu, and the former gunner shook off the challenge from Zambrotta to finish cooly sending the home side 2 goals up.Milan then went into combat mode, bringing on Pato, Seedorf and Ronaldinho. All went on to have outstanding games. The results manifested almost instantaneously. Dinho's cross had Inzaghi hitting the bar for the 3rd time in the game. Johnson who was the architect for the goals scored by Portsmouth, made a soft foul. The result of this was a fantastic free kick, one I would term world class. Who else but Ronaldinho! His goal scoring spree continues. The home side kept pressing in, and Zambrotta looped in a good ball into the penalty box, the poacher king was there for the finish. Inzaghi wearing the captain's armband scored, and celebrated like we won the Serie A as he had scored deep into stoppage time.

Player performances are not worth mentioning. Senderos cannot and should not defend, largely responsible for both the goals. Favalli's age could easily spell his pace, and to put him against a team from a league that is known for its pace was as good as suicide. Ancelloti decided to commit suicide. Zambrotta and Antonini were patently average. Shevchenko was anonymous, and a good number of friends think he is finished, I dont disagree.

Everything said and done, this was an excellent performance by Pompey. Never showed signs of intimidation even though they had a virtual second string team out. This one was surely for the fans. Milan however would like to recuperate after what happened, as more dangerous foes await them back home.

torrid defending

Torino 2 Milan 2
I have read several articles about Alessandro Rosina. He is the other Alex from Turin. Why is he wasting his life at Torino? One would never know. Stadio Olimpico di Turin hosted Milan. We were playing Torino. After the Derby di Italia ended in Inter's favor, it was necessary that we picked up maximum points from this game.
With Pirlo back and Favalli out of the squad, Milan looked lethal on paper. This game if contested on paper wouldn't have been a contest. But that's the beauty of football, anything is possible. AC started the game in a prevailing fashion. The Granata's only hope remained in Rosina, who was the best player on the pitch. Long rangers were the call of the day, and dont ask me why. When Torino players see a central defensive pairing of Maldini and Kaladze, why would they go for long range shots? On the 24th minute, Roberto Stellone found the back of the net for the Granata and who else be the architect but Rosina. Ariel balls along with several other challenges of defending have been concerns for our line of 4 in front of the keeper for awhile now. And they dealt with the this arieal threat just as they were expected to, which resulted in a goal. Milan reacted almost immediately, when Gattuso's superb pass found Pato, who controlled the ball beautifully before slotting home with a world class finish. Milan were stating their intent, and on the 34th minute Kaka was bought down at the edge of the area. Ronaldinho curved in a lovely free kick, making it look oh so easy. We were up by a goal now. 7th goal of the season for the Brazilian. Torino defense stayed put to keep the scoreline at 2-1 for the rest of the half

2nd half started as the first half ended. Milan dominating the game. Then the balance shifted with Torino moving ahead bravely in attack. The tempo was high as Toino kept going at Abbiati, and Milan reducing their scoring options to only counter attacks. Pato was sizzling hot today, and Torino were finding him hard to manage. The Rossoneri defense was sprawling and crawling around to get the ball out of the penalty area, and their shambolic defensive display resulted in a penalty. A cartoon named Kaladze decided to play handball with Rosina's pass and the referee wasn't far to be fooled. Rosina dispatched his penalty coolly, a well deserved goal for the Italian. Sheer grit. and an obstinate attitude from Milan kept them from conceding any further as Torino threw everything they had at their guests.

Defense was torrid as ever, and this time it reaped the right results. Maldini's valiant efforts were downsized by the result. And he couldn't cope with having clowns like Bonera and Kaladze beside him. Pirlo was showing shades of return to form. Gattuso has been spectacular this season and he showed no signs of letting go. Kaka has been pretty woeful by his standards, and sometimes I wonder if selling him to Madrid would have been good. His dive actually starled me. Ronaldinho has become a goal machine. Pato was definitely a standout player, a tireless performance from the center forward, also notched up a goal for himself. Fair play to the lad. But the game leaves me with one regret - If only Rosina, If only.

destiny calls?

Milan 1 Chievo 0
Sometimes I wonder, what should be the scoreline when two clubs, both at the opposite ends of the table, meet? I fathom a fancy number, like a 4-0, 5-0. And then I see a 1-0. Ouch! And the pain turns into a sting when you realize that the 1-0 is actually a destined scoreline and not a well earned one. Milan lost top spot after some atrocious defending against Lecce last weekend. Chievo were sitting pretty at the bottom of the table. One would have thought this would be a total devastation job by Milan, but AC merely saved their face. Unsurprisingly this is not the first time this season that this situation has occurred

'Lucky Milan close the gap' was the headlines on the Serie A section on Soccornet. I wouldn't disagree. Winning ugly is the stuff of champions, but winning lucky, really isn't. What people dont notice is that the teams we have played against so far are mediocre, below average teams, which probably wouldn't even fit into the EPL. The only big names we have beaten are Napoli and Inter, and again there, we were lucky.

In the first half, Milan faced some opposition from Chievo and we were able to deal with the danger. Ronaldinho was playing reasonably well, not only was his passing good, but he showed good strength. The moment of controversy arrived on the 14th minute, when a challenge made outside the box on Kaka was penalised with a penalty. The Brazilian maestro dispatched the penalty with utmost ease. Milan started to press ahead for the 2nd, but the Chievo keeper was up to the task. The partnership between Ronaldinho and Kaka was delightful. They have certainly developed an understanding, which was missing two years ago in Germany. The game began to slow down, and for the rest of the first half, people were only counting the minutes.

Sorrentino, the Chievo keeper was having a hayday between the posts. After the break, he made some neat impressive saves from Ronaldinho and Jankulovski. Penalty decisions were being turned down as the referee probably had realised at the break what an ass he had made of himself. Abbiati was also up to the job. With a patched up defense in front of him, he needed to be the man of the hour. There were some nervy moments for the Diavoli defense, and Ancelloti, sensing that his side would concede sooner or later decided to bring on Pato for Inzaghi. AC then had a host of chances with Pato, Jankulovski and Kaka, but Sorrentino was displaying the reasons as to why Serie A produces the best keepers in the game. With about 10 minutes to go, a move created by members of the Selecao resulted with a save from none other than Sorrentino. He saved twice from Jankulovski, who on another day could have scored a hattrick. And one of these saves was a world class effort from a short range free kick.

If not for Sorrentino, we could have made a meal of the visitors. But I will emphasize the fact that we lack a world class striker in the team, who would make any Sorrentino quiver. But hearing the comments coming from the Milan camp, that a player like Benzema is too expensive for the club, I see us surviving sheerly on fate.

benvenuto david beckam

It simply means welcome David Beckam. I know, I know. This is an article I should have brought out long ago, I am sorry, puhleez.
Now, cutting the crap, Beckam. A name that has been synonymous with football. If you are sharp enough, you would have identified the 2 words 'has been' in the sentence. But isn't AC Milan a squad nearly full of has beens? Well, to a certain extent I may have to agree with that question, one that I have raised for awhile. Revolution is on full swing at the Milanello. And apparently, the squad needed revival as it had come to the end of something people call a cycle. In my opinion, responsible clubs will never find themselves in this situation, but thats a different argument altogether.

Beckam at Milan, and more importantly in Italy, is a boon. He has a lot of star-power attached to him, and he will bring that to the country and the league, which will hopefully help in making it more recognized than it already is. Many have argued that this season, the Serie A is the league to watch. And I dont disagree. The quality that has arrived to the forefront is simply mouthwatering to behold. Beckam is only going to enhance this quality. Now, looking specifically at Milan - is Beckam someone Milan need? There are 2 answers to that question, yes and no.

The club has suffered a monetary blow after failing to qualify for the Champions League. Beckam will bring truckloads of moolah. Something a club of our stature needs to stay up in the elite. 13m euros is what is predicted, an income the club will receive during Beckam's stay at the club. Adidas would be delighted with this deal, English media will be eating their hats, and Milan will not spend an amount as absurd as 18m pounds to grab this veteran. TV rights will be secured, and that will raise revenues for the league. Plus Milan will find creativity in the heart of midfield, in Pirlo's absence. These are good enough reasons to sign this guy in my opinion. Some people say Beckam doesn't have the legs anymore to bomb up and down the flanks. Yes, i think so. Beckam has lost pace. I concur. But the most obvious reasons are being ignored in these statements. The Serie A is a league not known for pace, and Milan don't use wingers. Beckam will sit in front of the defense and dictate play, where he won't be required to move too much. No questions can be raised about his creativity, as it still remains a great asset. His passing is almost as accurate as it used to be. Then why not employ him as deep-lying playmaker? Beckam can play, and even though he wont make Milan the 600m euros he made for Madrid, he will contribute financially.

Now here are the reasons he shouldn't come. Milan have been called a club for the aged. And Beckam's arrival will only cement that arguement. Our midfield is the best in Italy, and possibly the best in world club football. So why a Beckam? We have 2 of the best set-piece experts in world football, then won't Beckam cause complications? Beckam will give Ancelloti more headaches in selecting the midfield. With his arrival, there will be 6-7 established international stars fighting for the 3 man midfield. There were talks about this move being made permanent, which immediately wipes out the return of the red hot Gourcuff from Bordeax. Also with the arrival of Becks, Luca Cigarini/Riccardo Montolivo/Kuzmanovic wont be bought, and these players are natural heirs to the ageing Pirlo. So all these points definitely question the foresightedness of the management.

The pros and cons of the arrival of Beckam remains a debate. The way he fits into the team is the managers headache, but he does make a powerful midfield, even more lethal. Also the commercial reasons are justified. As long as this move is not made permanent, we stand a great chance to benefit from this transfer. So lets put our hands together and say, benvenuto david beckam.

almost, but not yet

Lecce 1 Milan 1
Via Del Mare. One of the places the Diavoli don't like to visit. They had to visit it this time, and were compelled to continue the string of impressive results. It wasn't going to be easy. Psychological disadvantage and all that. But a good number of players in the playing 11 weren't part of the nightmarish visits previously, so it was a clean slate. That probably explains the reasons why Milan played like champions.

The gulf in quality was evident from the start. Milan distributed the play well, and they dominated possession too. Borrielo had impressed me from the beginning of the season, but his finishing yesterday was awful. He had a handful of chances, but he just refused to take them. We could have put this game to bed by the 20th minute, but our man here was squandering away chances. Lecce started to grow with confidence thereon, and the creaky defense of Bonera and Favalli started showing signs of frustration. Milan were playing the best football they had played all season, but they lacked in the final third. Borrielo was missing chances that a striker of a club of Milan's stature should've been putting away. Borrielo's lack of quality was evident through the first half, and he was absolutely shocking, especially on the chance presented to him on the 36th minute.

53rd minute, Kaka had a great chance when he was one on one with the keeper. But his final touch was a tad bit heavy. Wave after wave of Milanese attack was meted with awful finishing. Ronaldinho and Jankulovski had their share in attack. Lecce were holding onto the game with all they had, and wanted to leave the game with atleast one point. Borrielo was still making the same mistakes inside the box. Ancelloti realised that the current tactics will only make his team look good, and that wasn't enough.. So he brought on Inzaghi and Pato for Borrielo and Flamini. This found immediate effect as the cross from Pato found Ronaldinho, and the Brazilian in his goal scoring form wouldn't miss. And he dint. But that wasn't the end of it. Lecce did manage to tap into one of Milan's many defensive flaws - high balls. A wonderfully flighted free kick found Espesito and he put the ball into the Milan net just moments before the final whistle.

Abbiati would be disappointed to leave the Mare without a cleansheet. Zambrotta was fantastic and has been in good form so far. Gattuso, the way he is currently playing is probably the best holding midfielder on the planet. Kaka is showing signs of being considered by FIFA for World Player of the Year 2009. Ronaldinho was effective to say the least, but his goal scoring mania is all that counts for at the moment.
I would probably be the happiest Milan fan after this result. What a performance by Milan! Exceptional in attack. If not for Borrielo, we would have seen Lecce massacred. Also at the end of the game, seeing Galliani infuriated was a delight. There is great resolve and determination in this team. And despite this result, boy am I happy to see that.

leaving it late, again

Milan 1 Sporting Braga 0
Milan are winning, and all the Rossoneri fans are celebriting. So am I. But with measured proportions. AC are building a wall of victory, and many are turning a blind eye to what I would call 'cracks'. However this result can be taken at face value without too much dissection because of the strategy and tactics that Ancelloti employed from the start of the game. He played 3 strikers upfront in a 4-3-3 formtion. Totally new formation for the team, and emphasis on attack by a defensive minded coach.

Home side's defense was saved by pathetic finishing from visitors. A team that was winning away games with a comfortable 2-0 scoreline would have been expected to put the chances they got on the night to bed, but they simply couldn't finish. Kaladze and Senderos were struggling and were trying to get into the game and would have had a miserable game if not for the lack of decisive finishing on the part of the Braga strikers. Gattuso was solid as ever, and he was putting in a standout performance. He has been in outstanding form recently, and the reason behind this magical form could be the arm-band. Pato was running circles around the Braga defense and he was hard to cope with. Home side dominated possesion, but it seemed without purpose. Shevchenko was playing out of position on the flanks and was giving his best. His movements were nostalgic and a couple of his crosses reminded me of David Bentley. Inzaghi's supposed to have a good head, and he wasn't using it too well. He made a mess of a delightful cross from Sheva.

Braga were showing just how dangerous they were on the flanks but they lacked the finishing touch in the box. The game was heading towards a goal-less stalemate. Ancelloti then brought off Pato and Emerson for Ronaldinho and Seedorf. Both these men got into the game and showed signs of flair and attack from midfield. A certain move from Seedorf left the Portuguese mesmerised. Senderos did get better as the game progressed, but the minutes were taking its toll on his body. Ronaldinho then scored a 'wonder-goal' to seal the game, and it was an assist from Gattuso after winning the ball back from the opposition in the trade-mark Rhino fashion. The ball was hammered into the top left corner from outside the box, twas special to watch. But then I forgot all about the goal at San Siro when I saw what Huddlestone did to score the 3rd goal for Spurs, at White Hart Lane. That woke me up! Now, that's a 'wonder goal'!

AC were very lucky again to escape with 3 points. The reckless challenge by Emerson inside the box and the tackle by Senderos were not punished. If these decisions had gone against us, my article would have looked as different as the scoreline.
Milan go away to Lecce at the weekend, and it would be a tough game by Milan's standards of play. We do have a run of easy games so the string of 1-0's will most probably continue. I dread the day, we play a big team though.

its been worth the wait

Milan 1 Napoli 0
Four long years, since Milan were on top of the table in Italy. 4 long years. We are there, again. Deservedly, if I may put it. Outclassed and outmatched the young lions of Italy, did the veteran war horses.

The first half started on an attacking note, which took me by surprise. Expected a match of this stature to be more subdued and cagey. But Napoli showed their confidence(or over-confidence) by playing an expansive game. Both teams attacked one another. Borrielo and Lavezzi were bright from the start, but the spark of the Argentine remained through the game. Milan were attacking relentlessly, and somehow Napoli were able to consolidate their defense and prevent conceding a goal. Fabiano Santacrocce was primarily responsible for this consolidated defense. Kaka wasn't going to have the best of nights as he blasted over a shot from a reasonable tough angle, the frustration was evident. Hamsik was injured on the 32' and had to be substituted. He was having a quiet night, and Gattuso should be given credit for that. Maggio was having a torrid time with Jankulovski bombing down his flank. He put in a terrible tackle on the Czech and was sent off, second yellow for the young Italian.

Milan started the second half as they had finished their first half. Ronaldinho was denied by the Napoli keeper, and that seemed like a miraculous save. It wasn't the first time that Lezzo was denying Ronaldinho in the game. This keeper was having the night of his life, and he can be thanked by all the Azzuri fans for not conceding more than 1 goal in the game. On the 54', Santacrocce was injured and thats when the visiting team's defense started showing signs of vulnerability. Pato and Inzaghi were bought on - a radical step by a defensive minded coach. Milan defense could not be breeched as the Napoli attack tried as hard as they could. The Rossoneri defense was impermeable. Kaka hit the post with a beautiful shot, and that wasn't the last time he was going to be denied a goal. He also missed a penalty! It simply wasn't his night. Pato also missed a sitter, and that summed up the game for Milan. But wait! It wasn't over yet.. 5 minutes from time, Ronaldinho whips in a cross from a free kick, and last week's Napoli hero, scores for Milan! German Denis!! Yes yes, it was an own goal, but I can say with much glee that it was a beautiful header.

As for the performances, everyone in defense were solid, special mention must go to Bonera and Jankulovski with the latter being exceptional in attack. He created so many chances, it was a delight to watch. Gattuso was constantly nipping at the heels of the young opponents and Ambrosini did his job with minimum fuss. Seedorf was inconsistent but a few of his passes, the one to Jankulovski in particular was mind blowing. Milan have notched up 10 wins out of 11 games, and seem invincible right now. And let me not forget to mention, this game was won purely on credibility and not luck.

A certain correction has to be made here, as a fellow mate of mine just enlightened me. The goal scored wasn't an own goal. Its apparently Ronaldinho's! FIFA directives on goals/own goals, if a shot is directed at goal, it stands as a goal even if it is deflected of an opponent. This is some handy piece of information. Thanks Prashant. And thank you FIFA.

propitious referees

Milan 2 Siena 1
The hallmark of great champions is winning, and winning gloriously. Somehow, it doesn't apply to Milan lately, and by lately I mean the previous 3-4 seasons.Thats an awful lot of time for a club to prove itself. Yes the club had its share of tough times, but the arrogance of the club has contributed in its own way. Nonetheless, that is a different argument altogether.

What I am hitting at is, how can a club like Siena, come to the Guiseppa Meazza and leave unscathed? Very few players from the home side showed any drive. Pato for me stood out, and so did Gattuso. Kaka, yes you can call me biased here. First half started with both the clubs uncertain as to what they must do with the football. Slowly the game gained the desired pace. Developing wingback, Antonini, had a good game. He constantly bombed up and down the flanks. Learning from his Italian team mate Zambrotta. By the way, it was an all Italian defense. Dint posses the characteristics to be hailed as one though. The terrible pairing of the 2 most uneducated center backs for Milan in Bonera and Favalli played its role in my judgment of the defense. In attack, Pato was a bright spark, the kinda player who would run riot in any defense. His special moves were scintillating. The way he ran past 3 challenges shows he has got a physical dimension to his game as well. Siena attack seemed disinterested in scoring the goals. Maybe their coach has team talk issues. Milan however did break the deadlock with Inzaghi finishing a beautiful move that was started by Kaka. Gattuso was unusually good in passing the ball, and he had an effort cleared off the line in the second half. Good play by the dogged midfielder.

Second half, Siena started brightly, and this time they seemed like they knew what to do with the ball: score. And they did, the Rossoneri defense did obviously contribute. And then the side from the San Siro got a bit more active. There was a certain urgency in their play. The referee may have had some sort of affiliation for Milan as he decided to give a penalty against Daniel Portanova of Siena, which Kaka dispatched with relative ease. Milan were up and running again post the penalty. Pato was still a menace as his header crashed against the post, and he just about volleyed wide after some tremendous ball control. Siena then upped their tempo, and that made the former European Champions a bit shaky. All said and done, we did come away with the 3 points. And our defense can thank their stars for not conceding more than one goal.

Manitta, the Siena keeper was partially responsible for the scoreline being close. He put in a decent display. Emerson is impressing Ancelloti, and that is not a very good thing. And what Favalli is doing to impress Ancelloti, one would never know. Abbiati was ok, not his best. Zambrotta had a decent outing, and so did Seedorf. Though the latter went missing during some parts of the game.

Napoli await us at the weekend. The pace of Denis, Lavezzi and Hamsik can potentially rip apart our flimsy defense. I would be pleased with a draw and delighted with a win. We can only count on our attack to fire us to victory against the mighty young lions from Naples.

painful win

Atalanta 0 Milan 1

The Bergamo has haunted Milan for a while now. The haunting continues. This was to be the 50th meeting between the 2 sides in Bergamo. The home side was doing well this season, and were placed in 8th position having 13 points on the table. The Rossoneri also were having 13 points on the table but were higher on goal difference.
This stadium was Atalanta's fortress, with the home side being unbeaten here over the season. But yes they had played the likes of Siena, Cagliari and Sampadoria here. The visitors had to bridge the gap on the leaders, so a win here was absolutely necessary.

First half, the home side were making a mess of Milan. The pace of attack seemed too much for the visitors, as the center back pairing of Maldini and Bonera found the attack relentless and unmanageable. Milan's inspiration came in the form of Abbiati who was clearly the difference between the two sides. Besides Kaka, its been the Italian goalkeeper who has been the most consistent for the Diavoli this season. Milan had chances, but were being scuffed by the under-par (inconsistent) Ronaldinho. Borrielo was a bright spark up front along with Kaka, who was playing very well. The Brazilian was creating enough number of chances, but the lacklustre visiting side wasn't able to penetrate. Maldini brought down Floccari inside the penalty area. Atalanta were asking and pleading for a penalty, but the referee was having none of it. On another day, the decision could have easily gone in favor of Atalanta. The scores were level at half time. It dint seem like a deserving scoreline. Milan were definitely flattered (and flattened)

Second half, the Bergamaschi started were they left off and prevented Milan to get into the game. Ferriera Pinto was one of the better players for the home side, and he was making Jankulovski look like an amateur. The Czech international was poor in defense and in attack. Zambrotta was no different. Ronaldinho was a complete disaster today, and was rightfully taken off for fellow Brazilian Pato. Cigarini, who was providing creative flair for the home side put in a poor tackle on Pato, and injured himself in return. He was stretched off, as a result of that injury. Towards the end of the game, Borrielo had a glorious chance on a volley, but he cut the ball back for Kaka who finished with a fine chip over Copolla. A very nice finish from Kaka and great unselfish play from Borrielo. The pass to Borrielo was provided by Pato, who set up the pass for the Italian international with a pin point header. Atalanta threw all their players forward after conceding the goal, and a dismal Milan defense was saved by Abbiati. Unexpectedly, Milan left the stadium with all 3 points.

Luck was well and truly on our side today. If not, we would have suffered a grave defeat. Milan have been riding high on luck factor, and this undeserving win seems to prove that point. Lets see how much luck we have against Siena, this Wednesday.

stamp of authority

Heerenveen 1 Milan 3

Holland welcomed the San Siro giants for the Uefa cup group stage game. The Diavoli had qualified after defeating Zurich convincingly in the qualification phase. The Dutch task awaited. Luck wouldn't be the answer, and considering Milan's poor form against the smaller teams, expectations were high.

The team that Ancelloti fielded was very competitive, though in my opinion looked defensive. Flamini, Gattuso and Emerson in midfield. That barely spells ambition. Maybe Bereens words psyched him, or perhaps it was the his household issues, whatever it was, wasn't very pleasing. What I did like was the employement of 2 strikers up front. Fillipo Inzaghi and Andrei Shevchenko. Two well proclaimed stars of the 'ageing galacticos'. Behind them was the red hot Kaka. The defense had Favalli in it. So we can safely assume there was no defense. Dida was between the posts, which makes the assumption even more dependable.

First half started with the Dutch team taking the game to Milan. It was a scary experience as I have just mentioned that the Italians had no defense. Somehow we dint concede. After the departure of Afonso Alves to the Riverside, Heerenveen have forgotten the concept of scoring goals. And they dint seem to remember the concept, even though they could recognize Favalli's face in the opposition defense. Milan got hold of the game and dictated tempo. Due to some catastrophic defending and some shambolic keeping, the visitors took the lead. It was Kaka's cross from wide out. A delightful ball in, but it was the home team who scored. An own goal, i.e.
Kaka was running Heerenveen ragged, and he sent in a lovely pass again from wide out to find the boot of a charging Gattuso who finished it calmly to the bottom left corner. 2-0 to the Rossoneri. It was nice to see the captain scoring. Yes, you read right. The 'Captain'. Shevchenko possibly had personal differences with the Heerenveen keeper, because all his efforts, including a splendid free kick were kept out miraculously.

Second half started slow, with both teams playing as though they were content with the result. This continued until the homeside realized they were 2-0 down and started attacking. The obvious happened. Milan found space and Gattuso's fine pass found Inzaghi, who finished it for Milan. Must put it in here that it was a lucky goal, because Pippo's finish wasn't world class and keeper got a touch that contributed to the goal. Milan weren't done. Favalli had to show his colours, and he did. Gave away a penalty, which Pranjic took cheekily.

Dida was sound between the posts, Favalli is 37 years of age. Thats exactly how old Pep Guardiola is. And Guardiola is the manager of FC Barcelona. Get the hint Favalli?? Emerson played wonderfully, and so did Gattuso. He led by example. Kaka was unstoppable, Inzaghi and Shevchenko always looked like scoring. So over all it was a decent outing, wasn't fantastic, as the goals we scored - we wouldn't have against a top class team. Emerson played the best match in his Milan career, but lets not forget who he played against.

Atalanta await Milan, Del Neri must have already started plotting. They managed a double against us last season. I hope we manage the same against them this season. Not for pride, but for the Scudetto.

favor favors a favorable result

Milan 3 Sampdoria 0

Sometimes scorelines can be very flattering and so was the case in this game. The hosts were made to struggle all through the first half and would have probably continued if not for the referee's error. Stefeno Lucchini was sent off after conceding a penalty. He had his hands stretched out when Jankulovski tried to take a shot at goal. It was a definite penalty. Was it a sending off? No. Why? The distance between Lucchini and Jankulovski was not much, and Lucchini had less that a second to react.

Milan were at the receiving end of poor refereeing decisions over the last 2 terms. So it is nice to have Milan winning games due to the same. This is the second result in recent history that has Milan leaving the San Siro with 3 points due to a poor refereeing decision. I do feel sad for Mazzarri. The poor guy hasn't won a single game with the club from the start of the season. And he is the same guy, who did very well at Reggina between 2004-2007. Seeing his infuriated display and outburst at the decision was delightful, it made me laugh.

We struggled through the first half, could barely find space. Cassano was obviously the most imposing player of the visitors. Our defense was solid, the only weakling there was Bonera (as usual). Maldini was giving almost everyone in the opposition a complex. There was this moment in the game, where he pushed the ball past a Sampadorian player and outran him for the ball. Antonini put in a sound performance and so did Jankulovski. In the midfield, Ambrosini did what was asked of him, Seedorf blew hot-blew cold. Flamini was his usual dogged self. Ronaldinho is certainly showing signs of returning to form. His penalty was unstoppable and his second goal was a result of beautiful sync up play with Kaka. Who said that these 2 can't play together?? Pato was tireless, Borrielo wasn't up to the mark, but this is his first game after returning from injury. Inzaghi came on in the second half and capped a good move with a typical finish.

It was a fine afternoon at the San Siro and the result was a favorable one for the home side. But can we continue depending on favors to win games? I hope not. Milan are a team with a lot of players who have 'been there and done that', and I am sure this trend won't continue for long. We will win the big games on sheer credibility and not good fortune. That I am certain of.

pointless friendlies

FK Tirana 2 Milan 1

How often do you see an European giant getting humiliated? My bet is not very often. Milan seem to be the case exemption. They suffered their umpteenth defeat in a friendly against a lame Albanian side, yesterday. It was a friendly sponsored by Unicef. Ancelloti's pre-match interviews were not very encouraging. The impression I got from reading them is that he is taking the team to Albania to experience another defeat. Many fans will say this was just a practice match? Yes, it probably was, but losing?? C'mon. I hate to say this, but other top flight clubs wouldn't take a defeat like this lightly. I being a Milan fan have been disgraced enough this season, seeing Milan lose to some of the most mediocre sides in Europe. So this wasn't a new feeling for me.

Losing is a significant blow. Its hard to convince me it doesn't matter. When you play for one of the most prestigious clubs in Europe, and you lose to sides who should be learning football from you, its merely a morale booster. These friendlies are doing more harm than good, for the players, and for the club.
Nesta was making his return after 5 long months. Last season, he was considered by many as the best center back in the world. Even I did, till i realized his consistency rate. A player aged 32, missing half a year due to injury and susceptible to more injuries cannot be rated the best center back in the world, no. Ironically, this game marked the return of 'Pippo'. It also marked his exit, as he has returned to the list of injured 'stars' of Milan. He suffered a thigh injury in this game, so much for the practice games. A former Milan great recently wrote of Milan's Scudetto chances. Though I don't agree with his reasons, I also do believe this Milan team can't win the Scudetto. Losing to the most mediocre sides in Europe and drawing against a team that couldn't grab a point since the beginning of the season, shows the caliber of the Rossoneri. Beating these teams consistently, and getting results against the smaller oppositions is what brings home the domestic league trophy. One which our cousins are very professional in doing.

Deviating from a topic that is starting to become stale, lets move onto the latest transfer rumors. Milan have shortlisted some fabulous players - Ramos, Moutinho, Fabregas, Santacrocce, Rinaudo, Zapata, Mexes and Agger. Gourcuff is out on loan at Bordeux, and he is making heads turn with his performances for club and country. The man who barely played him last season, made a statement that the Frenchman will return to the San Siro, and boy was I pleasantly surprised.

Milan's brand name is gradually tarnishing, thanks to these results. And unfortunately, the 'trifosi' is very forgiving. This could mark the rise of complacency in the club and the eventual downfall if things aren't put in place. I am sure many of you would think I am being premature with my comments, but I am only telling the truth.

disastrous draw

Cagliari 0 Milan 0

Milan were coming into this game from a 5 game winning streak. Many expected this to be a smooth ride for the club from San Siro. Cagliari were riding very low on form. Having played 5 games previously, the team was struggling at the bottom of the table with 0 points. This obviously means they had lost their previous 5 games. All of them! They had lost to Lazio, Siena, Juventus, Atlanta and Lecce. Not the most dangerous of oppositions in the Serie A, perhaps besides that of Lazio. You must be surprised how come Juventus aren't in my list of 'dangerous teams'. Thats because they have failed to score more than 1 goal in any of their Serie games this season and languish in mid table.

The first half started with Cagliari attacking Milan, like the visitors were a team from junior high. Milan were getting over-powered. Other than a few bleak chances Milan dint seem to find a stepping in the game. The defense was mediocre at best with Maldini putting up a stand-out performance for the second week in a row. The midfield was awful, Ambrosini is in the team because of his allegiance to the club for several years, more than anything else. Atleast, in my opinion. Seedorf played like he was doing Ancelloti a favor and Gattuso was as bad if not worse. He did show heart, but quality was missing. Something that has gotten synonymous with Brocchi who plays for Lazio this season.

Second half Milan were more assertive, but not productive. Kaka was doing ok, but Ronaldinho was compensating for an excellent performance last week against Inter. Pato also dint seem to have any solutions for the problems at hand. Abbiati was doing well, but was lucky on a few occasions due to poor finishing from the Cagliari attack. Milan were really fortunate to escape with a draw to be honest. They looked likely to concede at any moment, and the attack was too scared to score. We did bring on Shevchenko and Inzaghi for the disappointing pair of Ronaldinho and Pato. But it was too late. If only Ancelloti had used his head to play 2 strikers from the beginning.

To top it all, Maldini comes up to the press and says that Milan cannot always play well, and Galliani blames the UEFA Cup for the draw. Aren't we getting fed up with the same excuses, and how lame are these excuses?? If consistency is a problem, then Rossoneri can wave the Scudetto goodbye. But everything is not lost as we are 3 points below the leaders with 6 games gone. We play Sampadoria in about 10 days. Palombo, Cassano, Delvecchhio, Sammarco and Dessena await. But they haven't had a great start as they have lost 4 games out of 6, so there is hope of winning.

first of many more to come

Zurich 0 Milan 1

Milan have been lucky over the last couple of games. Can't deny that. We scored an offside goal against Inter and somehow managed to scrape past Zurich. Kudos to the Zurich attack that helped us achieve this result. I personally would have been pleased with a draw as well.

Milan in the 1st half were exposed at the back. Surprisingly, the Zurich attack was so bad that Dida dint have to even move a muscle. What caught my eye was the excellence of the sync of play upfront. Ronaldinho+Seedorf+Kaka+Shevchenko=Mesmerising!!

Zurich defense was left pleading for mercy. Ronaldinho has probably gotten Laporta thinking if selling the Brazilian was a wise decision after all. Seedorf has certainly done away with his personal differences with the the 'Gaucho'. And then the goalscorer, Andriy. Abrahamovic's best friend is showing return to form. He was a constant threat to the Zurich defense. This goal will certainly do great deal of good to the confidence of the striker. This is his first goal for Milan since the return from the Blues. The chip from Ronaldinho leading to the goal was one of his trademark moves.

Now coming to the controversial penalty. I agree it was a penalty. Zambrotta's awful sense of tackling was displayed again. And Milan were not punished. Maybe if the penalty was given, the scoreline could have been very different.
Antonini is a player for the future and he is a handy player, want him to stay in the team. Emerson, what you 'still' doing in the team mate?? Kaladze and Favalli were injured, and I could not be happier with an injury to one of the squad players of my favorite club. Bonera is a better right back but Ancelloti prefers to play him at center, the gaffer has certainly lost his screws. Flamini and Ambrosini were ok, wouldn't want to expand on the attack, as i have already mentioned how good they were

Milan take on Cagliari in the weekend, and here is hoping for the a 'Cagliarian Demolition'.

milan win the derby della madonnina

Milan 1 Inter 0

The biggest derby in club football took place at Milan last night. The participants were AC Milan and Inter Milan, as usual. Milan were going into this match coming from a bad patch of form. Inter were sitting pretty on top of the table, and were the clear favorites.

This was supposed to be the most fascinating Milan derby in a long time. This was because of the star power added to the
Rossoneri squad over the summer and the appointment of the 'special one' at Inter. Milan had decided to field the famous Ka-Pa-Ro, this time the Ro was not Ronaldo but Ronaldinho. Inter's worst nightmare was on the bench. His name is Shevchenko, had scored 13 times in 16 derbies. Inter surprisingly though having the potential of fielding the strongest and scariest strike force in the world, decided to go with Ibra lone up. Quaresma and Mancini were playing as wing forwards. Why dint Mourinho use Adriano in the starting line up? One would never know.

Milan started the first half really well and attacked relentlessly and this ended with a positive result as
Ronaldinho completed a fantastic move with a goal, stunning header to the top corner with Julio Ceasar having no chance to stop it. Oh what an assist from Kaka', that ball in would be a striker's delight. Milan then decided to sit back and soak the pressure after that goal went it, and gave Mourinho a taste of his own medicine. That according to me, was the best part of the match. But once Adriano and Julio Cruz came on in the second half, Inter were not the same team. Adriano was a constant threat and had numerous chances to equalise but he couldn't. Milan in a way were quite lucky to escape with 3 points. Why would Ancelloti take off Pato and bring in Flamini when Gattuso had his wrist injured? Why would he bring in Bonera once Burdisso was sent off? I think Ancelloti is sending a subtle message across to the Milan management through his tactical decisions. And he has never concealed his love for Roma, so..

Abbiati was solid, some impressive saves, and displayed one of these saves just seconds before Milan scored . Maldini marked Ibra out of the game, and he is putting in some special performances. Hoping it continues. The wingbacks were sound and Kaladze seemed fine as well. Gattuso was his old self and was like a bulldog in the midfield. He along with Seedorf dominated the center of the park for Milan and were clearly outshining Cambiasso and Viera. Ambrosini stood like a wall blocking everything coming in his way and he was hard to get by. Ronaldinho was showing glimpses of getting back to form, and his passing was sublime. Kaka displayed he is still world class despite the injuries and if he carries on playing like this he would be one of the favourites for the Ballon D'Or and the World Player of the Year next year. Pato, well he needs to improve and playing lone up isn't really his cup of tea. But he will improve no doubt.
As for Inter,
Ibra showed why he isn't Golden Ball material. Another big game, another flop. Mancini was constantly practising how to dive, Quaresma was anonymous. Cambiasso played well and so did Viera. Burdisso was sent off after a rash challenge on Kaka. But the player who takes the cake is Julio Ceasar. The keeper from Brazil put in an outstanding performance to keep the scoreline dignified for Inter. The saves from Kaka, Ronaldinho and Shevchenko were magical.

We have stamped our authority upon Inter and we have won 3 games on the trot in the
Serie A. We own the bragging rights of the city till the next derby. If the current form is maintained we could be holding the Scudetto come season end. And yes, I almost forgot, Mourinho is still grumbling. What a jackass!! Hahahaha!!

FORZA MILAN!!
